Should the water be replaced from time to time?

This is a perfect craft for little ones because they can help pour the water and oil (with a funnel) and choose their own color. I suspect the more curves and shapes in the bottle used, the more mixing occurs with the water and oil. Adding a few things to the bottle may also aid the mixing action. I think I have some buttons shaped like fish, which would be fun.
