Paint Cleaning Tips

Don't fret over that blue paint spattered across your oriental living room rug. With these helpful tips for cleaning paint from carpet, you won't be able to notice there ever was a stain to begin with. The kids can still continue painting, and you won't have to worry about a big mess to clean afterward.

  1. Blot. Don't Scrub! Can you hear your mother's voice echoing at you from the past? Well, as always, mothers know best, and scrubbing at the paint stain will only drive the paint deeper into the rug or carpeting, which is exactly the opposite of what you want. Blot the stain gently like how you would apply make up to your face in the morning.

  2. Use a sponge instead of a rag. Sponges are easier to use when blotting because of their soft texture. You’re more likely to start scrubbing with a rag than with a sponge. Sponges are blotting-friendly.

  3. Keep hot water on hand. The hot water will soften dried paints and make it easier to lift the paint from the carpet fibers.

  4. Let the solution set on the stain. By mixing detergent and hot water, you'll create a magical carpet removing solution that you won't believe you'd never thought of. Soak a sponge in the hot water/detergent solution and place the sponge over the carpet stain. The warm water and soap will soften the paint as well as clean the fibers of the carpet.

  5. Use a chisel or putty knife to lift paint from carpet. Once the hot water and soap has thoroughly soaked into the stained area, Take a flat metal tool like a chisel or putty knife to gently lift the paint from the carpet. Keep a paper towel nearby to wipe the paint you've collected on to.
