Materials List

  • Cardstock paper
  • Embroidery floss or yarn
  • Needle
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Template (Download Below)

Instructions

  1. Select a colored cardstock paper for the craft. The color of the cardstock paper and the floss or thread used for the heart pattern should contrast one another. Cut out a square paper from the cardstock paper, we’re using a 4 inches x 4 inches paper. Or you could trace the heart pattern on the cardstock and then cut the paper into the required size.

  2. Prepare the needle with a thread and tie a knot at the open end of the attached thread. If working with younger children you will want to pre-punch some holes with a very small hole punch and then use a plastic needle. This allows them to still do the craft (with adult supervision) safely.

  3. Draw the needle through the cardstock paper, along any one point off the traced heart shape.

  4. Leave a small gap and then draw the needle back to the previous side.

  5. Work 1 stitch at a time along with the traced heart shape. You could keep the length of the stitches even on both sides or you could stitch unevenly, however you want.

  6. Continue to stitch until the entire heart outline is covered. Once the needle reaches near the first stitch, draw the needle under the first stitch and tie a knot. Cut off extra thread.

  7. Flip the stitched cardstock paper to the other side.

  8. Cut out a square shape with 1cm extra on all sides compared to the size of the stitched paper. Attach the heart stitched paper in the middle of the large paper. This will secure the backside of the stitched pattern. Once this is done, your Valentine’s Day craft is ready to display, make a card with, or whatever else your child chooses.
